Bird flu hits second Vietnamese province

A deadly strain of bird flu has been found in another province of Vietnam, killing about 300 ducks.

Officials found the H5N1 strain after testing samples from the dead birds, reported Xinhua.

On top of the duck farm in central Nghe An province, officials also suspect birds with the H5N1 virus in Ca Mau.

A spokesperson for the department of animal health under the ministry of agriculture and rural development said the birds had been culled around the affected spot in Nghe An.

The area had also been disinfected to guard against any further outbreaks.

Health officials have been concerned that more residents are turning to raising their own poultry and ducks in the event of food shortages.

Bird flu can be caught by humans who come in close contact with the birds, both in slaughtering and preparing them, the World Health Organization has said.
