Drinking water project for Iraq

A new project to improve the health and sanitation systems in Iraq has been launched.

Funded by the European Community and implemented by Unicef, the £6 million initiative is set to boost the country's water services.

A focus on young people has been central to the project, while meeting the water needs of the entire population is the main aim.

Sikander Khan, Unicef's Iraq representative, said: "This investment will provide over 100,000 people including children from 30 schools in Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, Muthanna, Thi-Qar, Missan, and Basra with improved access to water and sanitation facilities.

"We aspire to enhance quality water and sanitation coverage to all Iraqi children and families, which will ensure the millennium development goal of reducing by half the number of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water by 2015 is attained."

Meanwhile, Unicef has moved its central offices in Iraq to Baghdad, in order to help in the country's efforts to restore stability.
