Fines for failing to protect against Dengue

Residents in Taiwan have been threatened with fines of up to NT$6,000 (£120.51) if they do not get rid of the places Dengue mosquitoes breed.

Taiwanese authorities reported on Wednesday 374 cases of Dengue Fever around the country with 89 per cent in Kaohsiung which is set to host the World Games in July.

Over-spraying was blamed by the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA), which said insects had become resistant to the chemicals.

Deputy director of the EPA's Department of Environmental Sanitation and Toxic Substance Management Wendy Wu said: "Spraying insecticide is only a temporary solution to the problem."

A more effective measure would be to remove the breeding grounds for mosquitoes, which are standing water portables, she added.

In total, 99 nations are expected to take part in 35 sports as part of the World Games, which are held under the auspices of the International World Games Association.
