Hawaiian teacher infected with TB, students get tested

Health officials from Hawaii have tested more than 100 students and staff members of a school this week, after a teacher was found to be infected with tuberculosis (TB).

The island's Department of Health conducted the tests on students and teachers from the Kahuku High and Intermediate School as a (DoH) precaution to the spread of the deadly disease.

According to the Honolulu Advertiser, the DoH drew up a list of students and staff members who had come into contact with the teacher, using that as the basis for their testing.

This is the second school in Hawaii that has been checked for TB infection in recent months. During December, another 136 students and staff members were tested at the Roosevelt High School after a student was diagnosed with the disease. The tests revealed two further students with TB.

A spokesperson for the DoH explained that the incidence of TB infection has risen slightly over the last two years in the state of Hawaii.
