Jalapenos linked to salmonella outbreak

US officials are investigating whether jalapeno peppers could be linked to a salmonella outbreak.

The Centre for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention and the US Food and Drug Administration has previously issued warnings about suspected tomatoes in an attempt to identify the cause of the outbreak.

According to the CDC, over 1,000 people in 41 states and Canada have been infected with salmonella saintpaul, with one death confirmed in the outbreak.

The CDC has issued a warning that people with an "increased risk of infection", like infants or the elderly, "should not eat raw jalapeno peppers".

"The previous rarity of this strain and the distribution of illnesses in all US regions suggest that the implicated food is distributed throughout much of the country," added the CDC.

Ohio's 10TV recently revealed that shoppers in the state were not changing their purchasing habits despite the official warnings, with one shopper Linda Middleberg telling the station she has "been acting like normal".
