More focus needed in fight against Aids

Aids Accountability International has called for greater help for women with HIV or Aids.

The group has launched its Aids Accountability Scorecard on Women 2009, which discusses whether governments are keeping their promises on action against these infections.

According to the document, women are disproportionately affected by Aids, with the disease being a particular problem in sub-Saharan Africa.

The scorecard marks each country on issues such as gender mainstreaming, knowledge and behaviour, impact and national programmes.

It was suggested from the data gathered that many nations are not tackling Aids and HIV among women well enough, with 28 per cent - or 52 countries - being rated as "unfocused" on the issue.

Elizabeth Mataka, secretary general envoy on Aids in Africa, said: "We are losing too many women to this disease by not focussing on the practical interventions that help them to protect themselves from HIV infections."

Aids Accountability International aims to inspire leadership in the fight against Aids.
