New discoveries for HIV and immune system

Scientists have identified the protein which guides immune cells to the gut and is a target of the HIV virus.

Researchers from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) have found a cellular protein that is attacked once HIV begins its assault on the body's immune system.

Writing in the study, scientists said that the findings provided "important new information concerning the various mechanisms by which HIV debilitates the human immune system", adding that it also raised "new questions and challenges that our laboratory and others will pursue".

NIAID director Anthony S Fauci said: "The identification of this new receptor opens up new avenues of investigation that may help further elucidate the complex mechanisms of the pathogenesis of HIV infection."

Physicists from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Angel Garcia and Henry Herce, recently revealed that they had theoretical uncovered a relatively simple mechanism that described the pathway of an HIV peptide through healthy cells in the body.
