Why awards matter after all
20/09/2010
By Kelly Davis, Executive Producer, Global Health TV
No one who works in any aspect of global health does it to be recognized but I have to confess that when I got the news that Global Health TV had been singled out I was quite chuffed. We’ve been named finalists in the IVCA Clarion Awards 2010. The awards recognize excellence in media that promotes diversity, sustainability, community development and health issues. The IVCA is a well-known TV and video industry body and its awards are credible and prestigious. We’re up against some stiff competition.
While I know it is trite to say that it’s an honor to be nominated, it’s really important to me that Global Health TV gets out there and is recognized – and being nominated for an award like this really helps.
This week we also hit 2,000 Twitter followers. As I write this it sits at 2,025 and is still climbing. We are finding the Twitter community around global health lively and interesting – and challenging sometimes, with its range of takes on any given issue. (Click here to follow us.)
The channel has grown quickly in the past few years, gaining an audience of hundreds of thousands. That tells me that there are people all over the world interested in global health and that mainstream media isn’t meeting their needs. We want to be the channel that does! So, while there’s so much more we would love to do with Global Health TV, seeing everyone out there watching what we do, supporting us, and interacting with the channel through social media, gives me hope that we’ll get there. And if I have to dust off my heels and attend an awards ceremony or two along the way, well that’s a sacrifice I’ll have to make!

We're delighted to announce that Global Health TV was named Highly Commended in the awards, which were held in London last week. It's Global Health TV's second award - we won silver in the W3 awards last year (www.w3award.com) The shiny trophy has pride of place in the office and we're hoping it will be jostling for space with many others in the years to come.
