Gates Award for Global Health 2005 Winner: African Medical & Research Council (AMREF)

Capacity-building efforts recognised.

The African Medical & Research Council (AMREF) is based in Nairobi and has been working in Africa for more than fifty years, helping communities to establish their own healthcare infrastructure. In 2005 AMREF won the Gates Award for Global Health in recognition of the work it has done to research and disseminate best practise across the continent. Global Health TV met Drs. Michael Smalley and Miriam Were at the Gates Award Winners' symposium in Washington DC and found out why their emphasis on local staff and close partnerships has led to success.
