Peripheral Artery Disease or PAD occurs when arteries in the legs become narrowed or clogged with fatty deposits, reducing blood flow to the legs. This can result in leg muscle pain when walking, disability, amputation, and poor quality of life. The annual cost associated with amputations in the United States is about $13 billion. 50% of amputations in the USA occur without a prior angiogram to see if anything can be salvaged. The DEBORAH Heart and Lung Center in Brown Mills, New Jersey is developing new treatments to reduce amputation and improve quality of life for patients.
